As we spotlight local creative businesses, we're thrilled to also include local artists and designers! Berkley-based Artist Liz Frankland is inspired by vintage photos and classic pop culture images – and it shows through her work.

This holiday season sure looks different. Last year here at the Detroit Center for Design + Technology was buzzing with artists and designers selling their wares for Noel Night. We met all of those artists through the creative empowerment company, Embrace Creatives including Liz Frankland and we wanted to share a bit about her story with you this year.

Liz Frankland is an artist residing in Berkley, MI who's work is inspired by vintage photos and classic pop culture. In addition to her studio work, she teaches painting classes at Articipate in Berkley, MI as well as the Grosse Pointe Artists Association in Groose Point, MI.  Let's learn more about Liz, shall we?

DCDT: How are you preparing for the 2020 holiday season?
LF: "This season I am focused on adding items for sale to my website as well as working on commission pieces."

DCDT: What items are you spotlighting for sale this season and why?
LF: "I have a combination of prints and original paintings for sale on my website.  Also, I have a store on Society6 that features my Golden Girl and Frasier tv themed art.  There are art prints available and also other merchandise like phone cases and serving trays etc."

DCDT: How are you adapting your work or making the sale of your items accessible this year (amid the pandemic)?
LF: "A great deal of my work has been through Instagram over the years, so in that respect not much has changed or needed to adapt.  I can ship just about anything in the USA and have also overseas. Also, I can arrange for social distance viewing or virtual studio visits."

DCDT: Where are you personally shopping for gifts?
LF: "I’m shopping for gifts both as locally as possible and also from artists and small businesses that I admire. They include: The Style Plug for fashion;  Ron Shelton Detroit for musicians; Greg’s Celeb Art for fun pop culture stuff and Thom Kofoed if you know a major Murder She Wrote fan! The Peacock Room has so many beautiful things. There are cute stores in downtown Berkley as well."
