This holiday season at the Detroit Center for Design + Technology is usually filled with artists and designers selling their wares for Noel Night. One of those artists has been Mama Coo’s Boutique Owner Lana Rodriguez. Her Corktown shop is a must-visit any time, and especially when searching for perfect vintage or handmade gifts. Here’s how she’s getting ready for the shopping season in 2020:

Meet Lana Rodriguez, owner of Corktown-based Mama Coo’s Boutique, a resale and vintage shop that also carries handmade pieces by local artists and imported goods. Rodriguez, a Southwest Detroit native, makes it her mission to show representation and to be inclusive. “We do this through the inventory we carry and our price point,” she said.
DCDT: How are you preparing for the holiday season?
LR: “This holiday season Mama Coo's is really trying to carry super unique and thoughtful pieces. We realize that this year has been challenging for most - and our clients want to exchange more meaningful items than ever.”

DCDT: What items are you spotlighting for sale this season and why?
LR: “During the holidays we see a surge in sales of our locally handmade items. Our consumers love the fact that with one purchase they are supporting two local business, Mama Coo’s and the artists.”

DCDT: How are you adapting your work and making it accessible amid the pandemic?
LR: “Mama Coo's is offering purchases through our social media outlets - Facebook as well as Instagram - with curbside pickup. We are also open for in-store shopping, noon to 5 p.m. Thursday-Sunday, for 4 people at a time.”

DCDT: Where are you personally shopping for gifts?
LR: “Per usual myself and my employees prefer shopping local small businesses for our holiday gifts. These include super local Mom-and-Pop business that sometimes get overlooked for the more “ooh-lala” newer places opening. Some local businesses to check out include: Southwax, a local waxing spa; GeminEye Tarot for tarot card reading; Xochi's Gift Shop for beautiful imported items from Mexico; Duly's Coney Island gift cards for the best Coney in Detroit and Michigan Squeeze Station gift cards, a local cold press juice and smoothie shop.”
