This week, we’re talking @Home with…  April McGee-Flournoy, owner of Design Studio 6 in Detroit and Interior Compositions in Detroit and Southfield.

April McGee-Flournoy specializes in creative business development and management as well as commercial and residential interior design, event design and project management. She’s keeping especially busy this Detroit Month of Design by preparing to launch her company Design Studio 6. It is a 3,800 square foot emerging interior design studio located in Detroit's Bagley and Fitzgerald neighborhoods, and was the former art studio of her father, Charles McGee for over 43 years. The launch aims to engage the community, business owners, youth, local creatives and a network of supporters, and to inform them of services, programs and workshops that will be scheduled in 2021.

DCDT: Are you involved in the Month of Design? If so, how?
AMF: “I am renovating and launching Design Studio 6 - Detroit for an open house on Saturday, September 26.”

DCDT: What sets Detroit apart when it comes to art, architecture and design?
AMF: “Detroiter's have grit; we are creative makers with ingenuity and tenacity. We design, redesign and revitalize dilapidated buildings and spaces with salvaged - and any type of -material you can think of to beautify the environment. Our artists are passionate about Detroit's comeback and participate through their work and visual storytelling.”

DCDT: What businesses are you supporting at this time?
AMF: “I am supporting Alex Designs and Detroit design:rehab as we collaboratively make an impact in the Detroit design community.“

DCDT: Where are you finding inspiration amid the pandemic?
AMF: “I'm finding inspiration through Design Core Detroit and their support of designers. I am also inspired and encouraged by those who have the grit to continue to forge ahead in spite of our current situation.”
