THE WORK WE DO

Welcome to the Detroit Center for Design + Technology
The Detroit Center for Design + Technology opened in 2015 as the home of Lawrence Technological University College of Architecture and Design’s Detroit programs. Situated in Midtown along Woodward Avenue, the DCDT offers programs and opportunities - for both the public and for LTU students - to engage creative endeavors, collaborate with organizations and make a greater social and community impact for the future of Detroit.

EDUCATION

Lawrence Tech's College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) is dedicated to a pedagogy of “Theory and Practice”, the original motto of the University. In line with this pedagogy, the Center first and foremost acts as a home to the College’s Detroit-centric courses whose projects interact with adjacent sites and local organizations.

In addition to CoAD courses, the DCDT is an educational resource for the community, non-profit organizations and international exchange programs. The Center acts as a home base to STEM+Design, a collaboration between CoAD, Marburger STEM Center and Detroit Community Public Schools with the goal to engage students in a critically driven studio focused on the idea of community. Students in this program utilize the design process to create architectural interventions addressing community issues that are not only relevant to Detroit but globally.

At the DCDT, education is at the heart of everything we do.

ENGAGEMENT

Through our educational programming, economy initiatives and exhibition series, the Center interfaces with multitude of civic, community and private organizations. In all we do – we look to interface with external partners already in existence in order to maximize our positive impact in the city.

The Center houses the offices of LTU Detroit Studio, the National Order of Minority Architects Detroit (NOMA) and Building the Engine of Community Development in Detroit (BECDD). In addition to our onsite partners, we work and engage with a host of other organizations through our meeting space, community development efforts and sponsorship of new and growing initiatives.

ECONOMY

Detroit Center for Design + Technology plugs directly into Detroit’s growing economy. At DCDT Design Incubator we offer programs to students, recent graduates and entrepreneurs working to develop new or grow existing businesses that strengthen the local economy in Detroit. We work to engage the city, its citizens and business owners in all we do.

In addition, the Center houses exist organizations through our CoWork program like the Detroit Artist Business Institute (DABI), supporting artists in Detroit. Berardi+, a growing architectural firm who operates its Michigan office out of the Center. Brandcamp University, who runs its Detroit campus from our location. And Woodward + Willis, a student-lead design group who provides access to design services to businesses and startup companies. It all connects to engage our Detroit community with resources that support economic growth.
